The Gift of Magic

"The children of the Kalkorae and the Hundred Tribes, known as mundanes or, later, Mar, lacked an inherent ability that the invaders and the natives found essential.

"They lacked magic.

"By Mede and Wint standards, and by the land's standards, this meant they lacked the ability to survive."

Weard Darflaem would find that magic, and it would change the course of Marrishland for all of its history.

Posted by Matt on 2/6/06: Eric and I had known that Weard Darflaem's story would make for a series on the site someday. When I decided I wanted to attempt to write 50,000 words in January, I latched on to this possibility. I'm happy to say I did end up with 50,000 words, and almost 30,000 of them are about Weard, and will be posted over the next several weeks.

Posted by Eric on 2/11/2006: Weard Darflaem's story has fascinated me since I knew there was a Weard Darflaem in Mar history. As I wrote more details of Mar history, it became increasingly clear to me that here was a wholly remarkable historical figure. He discovered something he could easily have used to seize power over all Mar, and instead of guarding the secret jealously, he gives it away to anyone willing to learn how to wield it.
