In Marrishland, magic is the source of all power, so it isn't surprising that it plays such an important role in its history and culture. It also lies at the heart of the conflict in the book. To find out how, read the book.

Guider
The primary magic wielder in one of the Hundred Tribes (ca. 3,500 - 1,500 A.C.) is usually referred to by scholars and storytellers by this title. Among the wints of the Hundred Tribes, the guider role in a tribe was one of the most important and prestigious.
The origin of this title, however, is a shortened version of a Totanbeni title translatable as "the guider of the ancestors' fury." It is not entirely clear what role the guider played in Totanbeni history. Records left by those who fought the Totanbeni at sea often state that the best way to defeat these pirates was to focus on eliminating the guider, whose demise usually resulted in the retreat of the shadelshif he commanded. Whether the guider was a combat leader, a priest, or simply the most powerful magic wielder on the shadelshif is not clear. Mar tales commonly cast the guider in a role similar to that of the magocrat, a trend already visible in "The Guider's Apprentices," which was likely written before the rule of wizards in Marrishland had become absolute.
