Totem
A totem was the carved likeness of a patron god or goddess among the Hundred Tribes. Each of the Hundred Tribes worshipped a patron god or goddess. The shrine to this patron lay at the heart of each tribe's community, and the totem was the focal point of the shrine. The wints of the Hundred Tribes believed the totems were the physical presence of the tribe's patron, and many are the stories in which these totems spoke the will of the deity or came to life and led a tribe's army against their enemies. The presence of a totem in "The Guider's Apprentices" likely reflects confusion by the author between the Totanbeni and the Hundred Tribes, since the Totanbeni did not carve or revere a tribal totem.
