Marrishland has a long and violent history. Several civilizations have risen and fallen, here, and the book tells about events during one of the most turbulant periods - a period whose events determine whether a civilization survives or dies.

The Counterspell Campaign (ca. 2765 - 2778 I.D.)

Many Mar scholars made important discoveries thanks to Mardux Klug's patronage. During the decade of scholarship that followed, wizards learned how to combine two kinds of myst into the same spell - a technique that would be of enormous value in later centuries. They also discovered that several wizards could gather myst and shape it around a single wizard who would activate all the magic at once. While this latter practice fell into disuse as individual wizards became more powerful and because it was largely useless for multi-myst magic, it played an important role among the medics and magocrats of later centuries. It was during this time that wizards discovered some of the properties of Knowledge, including how it could be used to emulate the effects of torutsen.

The most important discovery of all, however, resulted from the capture of a lone Fygae engineer who had accidentally wandered right into the hands of the magocrats. The engineer made a futile attempt to use the limited personal arsenal powered by his belt to escape. Not only did the escape fail, one of the wizards discovered that Mar magic could see the magic generated by the Fygaen harvester and focus. If the Mar could see the device's magic, it seemed possible they could learn to counter Fygaen magic.

The wizards subjected the engineer to a great many discomforts in order to test the hypothesis. It is said they used Weard Schnitt's medical procedure several times to encourage the Fygaen engineer's cooperation. Regardless of their methods, the magocrats learned that Mar magic could, indeed, counter the magical effects of Fygaen foci. His greatest hopes confirmed, Mardux Klug declared war on the rebellion.

The Fygae had not been idle during this decade of peace, however. The cities along the southern coast of the subcontinent sided with the rebels against the magocracy in exchange for the magical wonders the Fygaen engineers promised them. By the time the Mardux renewed the war on the rebellion, the Fygae had already begun rebuilding the Kalkoraen infrastructure of Litus Albus and other important cities.

The magocrats advanced upon the perimeter community of Trozig and there delivered a stinging defeat to its defenders. The Battle of Trozig was only the first Mar victory over the Fygae-led rebels. For the next two years, the magocracy marched deeper into the borderlands, crushing opposition and advancing their skill at countering Fygaen defenses. The magocrats learned to invert the magic of Fygaen foci to disrupt or destroy controlling relays, which proved even more trouble to the Fygae than attacks on harvesters and conduits. Conduits and harvesters often had redundant back-ups to prevent disruption, but not only were relays difficult to replace, they were absolutely essential in such a redundant power system.

Within three years, the Fygae abandoned the rural Mar, their harvesters, and much of their infrastructure and retreated into the cities of the South. The remnants of the mundane rebellion surrendered to the magocrats and swore new oaths of fealty to the Mardux and his wizards. The magocracy withdrew its forces from the swamps and marshes its army had pacified by force and turned its full attention to the Fygae-occupied South.
