The First Mar Incursion (ca. 3250 - 3300 I.D.)

The Mar first tested their mettle against the tribes of sedge guer (sometimes called least guer), the race of Drakes nearest Domus Palus. They routed the sedge guer over the course of a few short years, forcing them out of their territory in the swamps southeast of Domus Palus.

At the time, the Mar touted their victory as evidence of their superiority, but historians recognize this would prove only a very small victory in Mar history. The sedge guer had the worst land in Marrishland as their sole territory, which certainly attests to their weakness among the Drake races. They no doubt begged their neighbors for help - and probably for refuge, once it became clear the Mar would offer them no quarter - yet their fellow Drakes did not come to their aid. The greatness of the victory over the sedge guer was a moral victory for the Mar - one they would cling to for the decades of grave defeats that followed.

Once they had vanquished the sedge guer, the Mar attempted to leverage their victory by driving farther east. Instead of villages and armies arrayed against them, the Mar met the spear-nosed guer for the first time. The casualties they suffered weren't very high, but fighting a foe they could not see until it was too late unnerved the Mar.

This in itself probably would not have spelled defeat, but a tribe of goblins living in the lands adjacent to those once held by the sedge guer determined to take advantage of the vacuum created by the defeat of their neighbors. The goblins easily overwhelmed the small Mar force left to guard the supply line for the main army, cutting the Mar off from Domus Palus. When the Mar army fell back to regroup after their initial confrontation with the spear-nosed guer, they walked into enemy territory.

After a series of intense battles, the Mar pressed through the goblin lines and into the lands near Domus Palus.

Those Mar who survived were convinced the goblins and spear-nosed guer were working in tandem against the Mar. Eager to recapture the territory and believing the best method of doing so would be to caputre the goblin headquarters in the sedge guer homeland, the Mar spent campaign after bloody campaign fighting their way deeper into the territory they had just lost to the goblins - all without success.

After nearly twenty years of futile struggle, the Mar turned their attention to the lands east and northeast of Domus Palus, skirting the territory the goblins had taken from them and using the Lapis Amnis to transport supplies to their outposts as they pushed slowly into new territory. The Mar and spear-nosed guer fought a running war for another generation before the last of the guer retreated north into the Fens of Reur.
