Arrival of the Kalkoraen Medes (1 I.D.)
The small fleet of speculators the ocean faring ships used by explorers from the Medien Empire that arrived from the west largely went unnoticed by both the Totanbeni and the remnants of the Hundred Tribes. Had it not been so, history might have taken a radically different course, possibly one that would have seen the Totanbeni conquer as much territory as the Gien Empire did. After spending some time searching for a safe harbor on the coast of Marrishland, the Kalkorae (meaning "dawn-treaders," which is what they called their expedition) decided to make landfall in the best natural harbor they had found there.
This was a deep harbor large enough to shelter a considerable navy, fed by a swift, rocky river, which they named the Lapis Amnis (meaning "stone river"). There was a stony hill two miles south of the river and a few hundred yards away from the coast. They found a Totanbeni outpost and a lone shadelshif guarding the harbor, but reckoned these a minor threat, since shadelshifs were smaller than the Kalkoraen speculators. Having found a defensible harbor in which to build their base of operations, the Kalkorae set out to establish a beachhead there. The result was the Battle of Strand, a brief battle between Kalkorae and Totanbeni that ended with the Kalkorae in control of what they soon dubbed Domus Palus.
