Initial Alliances (ca. 5350 - 5360 I.D.)
All the duxies eventually became involved in the Duxy Wars, but each joined for its own reasons and in its own time.
Duxy of Pidel
The Duxy of Pidel was at the center of the conflict that began the Duxy Wars. At the beginning of the wars, it was wealthy, powerful, and confident in its superiority. By the end, it was as torn by the wars as any of the other duxies.
Duxy of Piljerka
The Duxy of Piljerka wasted no time declaing war on Pidel, once it learned the coastal duxy was responsible for the attacks on its trading ships. It organized the alliance of duxies opposed to the Duxy of Pidel and was its the most active member. If Piljerka hadn't attacked Pidel for its ruthless trade practices, it seems likely another duxy would have. Because Piljerka initiated the conflict, however, several generations of Mar blamed the duxy for the the wars that later made Marrishland an easy mark for the Gien Empire.
Duxy of Skrem
The Duxy of Skrem, meanwhile, attempted to resolve matters diplomatically, demanding a weregild as repayment for the wizards it had lost to privateers. While the sum was huge, it was well within Pidel's ability to pay it without substantially diminishing its coffers. Ultimately, though, the Duxess of Pidel refused to meet these demands unless Skrem forced Piljerka to agree to surrender whose terms heavily favored the Duxy of Pidel. As these terms were not acceptable to the Dux of Skrem, it sent its diplomats to ally itself with Piljerka and prepared itself for war.
Duxies of Flasten and Gunne
The Duxies of Flasten and Gunne soon joined the alliance against Pidel, but neither was initially as committed to the conflict as the other duxies. It was not until later in this period that these duxies took on more active roles.
Duxy of Domus
The Duxy of Domus remained aloof, initially, refusing to join either side in the conflict. While both sides condemned Domus as cowards, in truth, the Duxy Wars began during a period of weak Marduxes who could barely retain the Chair from one year to the next, much less convince the disorganized magocrats of the Duxy of Domus to invade the Duxy of Pidel. It was, of course, this very weakness that ultimately forced the Duxy of Domus into the war.
Duxy of Wasfal
The Duxy of Wasfal supported Pidel, though at first it only sent a token force of wizards to her aid. As the wars dragged on, however, Wasfal's role grew.
