Piljerka-Pidel War (ca. 5350 - 5360 I.D.)
The Duxy of Piljerka swiftly sent an army to defend its border with Pidel but did not immediately invade, waiting instead for reinforcements from its growing alliance. The Duxy of Pidel immediately recognized Piljerka's clear threat but did little to reinforce its defenses, which were already formidable.
As Piljerka quietly allied itself with the Duxies of Skrem, Gunne, and Flasten, it worked to build a navy. The ships of the Piljerka Armada were large, hulking and slow. Each carried dozens of small, light outrigger canoes large enough for six men. The carriers were no more than a conveyance for these outriggers, which were manned by wizards.
It was not until an army of wizards from three duxies crossed its northern border, killing any Pidel magocrats who refused to join them, that the Duxy of Pidel finally moved. While its wizards were in the field fighting the land invasion, the Piljerka Armada destroyed much of Pidel's navy and besieged Pidel Palus, capturing it.
Piljerka's alliance executed the Duxess of Pidel and most of her closest advisors. The Dux of Piljerka declared himself also the Dux of Pidel. The priests of the Duxy of Pidel objected on the grounds that they had always chosen the Dux of Pidel from among themselves, but Piljerka refused to bend. The priests preached against the invaders, and when the dux ordered the chief priests executed, the mundanes of Pidel Palus rose up against him.
To make matters worse, Piljerka's allies wished to share in the spoils of the war they had helped win. When he did not satisfy their demands, they invaded the Duxy of Piljerka. The Dux of Piljerka had, at this point, very little choice but to withdraw most of his army to defend his own duxy. In Piljerka's absence, first the Duxy of Skrem capured Pidel Palus, and then by turns Gunne, Flasten, and Skrem.
Each duxy involved tried to force the priests of the Duxy of Pidel to elevate a new Dux of Pidel chosen by the invaders. The loss of the chief priests, however, meant the priests were less united than they had been, and it soon became clear that there were more factions within Pidel Palus than outside of it - all of them claiming the right to elevate the next Dux of Pidel. The Duxy of Pidel, such as it was, degenerated further into chaos.
